Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)

The new government initiative to develop land and contribute to the recovery of nature

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is due to become mandatory across England & Wales for all building projects in early 2024. BNG is designed to allow planning authorities to determine whether a project will result in a net increase or decrease in biodiversity. The biodiversity assessment focuses on natural habitat availability, such as grassland, woodland and scrub.

Every project is required to demonstrate that by the end of the construction phase there is significant improvement to biodiversity overall, even if some habitat has been disturbed or destroyed by the development.

We complete a baseline habitat assessment of your site following the UKHab guidelines so that we know which habitats are present pre-development. This survey records how diverse habitats on site are and which elements could be retained and potentially enhanced.

Using GIS mapping, we overlay the habitat maps onto your plans for development, assessing which features (old buildings, scrub, veteran trees, etc) you intend to disturb or destroy and how we can plan to mitigate for any loss. For a development to achieve planning permission it will need to demonstrate an increase in overall biodiversity of at least 10%.

It may be that your site is large enough to create new wildlife-friendly features close to those that have been lost, or it may be necessary to buy Biodiversity Credits, where new habitat features (eg, ponds, woodlands) can be created on land elsewhere within the planning authority.

We are here to guide you through the BNG process by supplying you with the mapping, reports and advice needed to successfully proceed with your development whilst simultaneously improving the UK’s environment for wildlife.
