A lesser horseshoe bat roost

This survey, carried out for a client in Dorset, was great fun. The team used a thermal-imaging camera to pinpoint a lesser horseshoe, Rhinolophus hipposideros, just as it was waking up for the evening. We also set up infra-red cameras to record footage of lesser horseshoe bats light-testing (checking that conditions are dark enough) before flying out for the evening. This remarkable species of bat is rare in the UK, with a limited range covering the west, the south-west and Wales.

In this thermal-imaging video, the lesser horseshoe is waking up and preparing to fly.
